Cebu launches smart shelters and mental health aid for violence survivors
Cebu’s provincial government is expanding support for survivors of violence with new facilities and mental health services. Governor Pamela Baricuatro and health officials have launched specialised frameworks to aid recovery, including trauma care and psychological support. The Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office has begun building ‘smart houses’ at the Balay ni Neneng compound. Each unit includes air conditioning, a kitchen, and space for 8 to 10 survivors, along with administrative offices. These homes will provide shelter for women and children in crisis.
Governor Baricuatro and Provincia Health Office Chief Dr. Shiela Faciol introduced medical and mental health guidelines for the facilities. Services will cover psychological first aid, trauma processing, and improved access to mental health treatment. For younger survivors, play therapy and art therapy will help emotional healing. The government is also setting up help desks and referral systems at major transport terminals in Cebu. Medications for mental illness, anxiety, and depression have been stocked and will be distributed by psychologists.
The new measures aim to provide immediate and long-term support for survivors. Shelter, therapy, and medical aid will be available through the Balay ni Neneng compound and transport hubs. Officials expect the frameworks to improve recovery outcomes for those affected by violence.
