A growing number of patients are seeking ketogenic diet therapy for psychiatric disorders, but few clinicians currently offer it. Dr. Christopher M. Palmer, a Harvard psychiatrist, has explored the diet's potential for conditions like schizophrenia, reporting cases of symptom remission under strict medical oversight. While some trials are now underway, mainstream psychiatrists remain cautious about its broader use.
Dr. Palmer first observed the diet's psychiatric effects when treating a patient with schizoaffective disorder. Initially prescribed for weight loss, the patient later reported fewer hallucinations and delusions. This unexpected outcome led Palmer to investigate further, documenting two schizophrenia cases in 2019 where patients achieved full symptom remission and stopped antipsychotic drugs.
Currently, around 20 clinical trials are testing ketogenic therapies for psychiatric disorders. Three of these focus on schizophrenia: one at the University of Washington (led by Dr. Bill Hahn, results due in 2026), another at Stanford (led by Shebani Sethi, results in 2027), and a third international study with findings expected around the same time. Despite this progress, Palmer avoids the term 'cure,' stressing that the diet is a 'promising therapeutic approach' rather than a definitive solution.
Scepticism remains among many psychiatrists. Dr. Paul S. Appelbaum called the existing evidence 'very, very preliminary,' urging more research before wider adoption. Palmer acknowledges the challenges, including limited clinician availability and the need for rigorous supervision, but notes the high demand from patients seeking alternatives.
The ketogenic diet's role in treating schizophrenia is still under investigation, with key trial results expected between 2026 and 2027. While some patients have shown dramatic improvements, experts agree that more data is needed before the approach can be recommended broadly. For now, access remains limited, and treatment requires close medical monitoring.
