Court Rules Man Legally Insane After Stabbing Wife and Stepson in 2026

A 62-year-old man has avoided criminal charges after stabbing his wife and stepson in January 2026. The Izhma District Court ruled that he was legally insane at the time of the attack. Instead of prison, he will now receive compulsory psychiatric treatment in a secure facility.

The incident took place on the evening of January 25, 2026, when the man attacked his family with a knife. His wife suffered minor injuries, while his stepson survived a deep slash to the neck. Investigators later confirmed the man was intoxicated and suffering from a long-term mental illness during the assault.

The Izhma Interdistrict Investigative Department handled the case, with the Izhma District Prosecutor’s Office leading the prosecution. A forensic psychiatric evaluation concluded that the man could not understand the severity of his actions or control them. As a result, the court declared him unfit for criminal responsibility. Rather than a prison sentence, the judge ordered him to undergo mandatory treatment in a specialised inpatient psychiatric unit. The ruling, however, has not yet taken full legal effect.

The decision means the man will receive medical care instead of facing a criminal trial. His victims—his wife and stepson—both survived the attack, though the stepson required treatment for a serious neck wound. The case now awaits final legal confirmation before the treatment order is enforced.
