A new study suggests that cysteine, an amino acid found in high-protein foods, could help repair damage to the gut. Published today in Nature, the research shows how this nutrient boosts the regeneration of intestinal stem cells. Scientists believe the findings may offer hope for cancer patients recovering from radiation therapy. The study was led by Fangtao Chi, with senior author Omer Yilmaz overseeing the research. Their team discovered that cysteine triggers a chain reaction in the immune system. This process activates CD8 T cells, which then release IL-22—a protein that stimulates intestinal stem cells to regenerate.

Previous research had not linked cysteine to gut repair. But in experiments with mice, a high-cysteine diet helped restore the intestinal lining after radiation damage. The amino acid works by switching on an immune signalling pathway, accelerating the growth of new tissue. Cysteine is naturally present in foods like meat, eggs, and legumes. The body can also produce it, though dietary intake may enhance its effects. Researchers now suggest that increasing cysteine levels could aid recovery in patients whose intestines have been harmed by cancer treatments.

The findings highlight a potential new way to support gut healing through diet. If confirmed in humans, cysteine-rich foods or supplements might become part of recovery plans for radiation patients. Further studies will determine how best to apply these results in clinical settings.
