Those with at least daily AI use showed a 30% greater chance of at least moderate depression. However, the link was only strong when AI was used for personal reasons, not for work or education. Depressive symptoms were more common in two age groups: 25 to 44 and 45 to 64. The research also tied high AI usage to increased anxiety and irritability. But the authors stressed that the study does not prove AI causes these problems—only that an association exists. Some experts have raised concerns about AI reducing real social interaction. They warn that over-reliance on AI tools could deepen isolation and loneliness. At the same time, the study noted potential benefits, such as AI chatbots supporting therapy when used alongside human professionals. The findings align with earlier research on social media and mental health. While no single 2025 study was identified on AI and depression, multiple recent papers—including Augustin M.’s work on AI-associated psychosis—highlight similar concerns about technology reinforcing negative thought patterns.
