Daily Fruit Juice or Smoothies May Reduce Depression Symptoms, Study Finds

A daily glass of 100% fruit juice or a smoothie could help ease depressive symptoms, new research suggests. The study, published in the British Journal of Nutrition, tracked 42 adults over four weeks and found noticeable improvements in mood. Participants who included these drinks in their diet showed lower depression scores without any harm to their blood sugar or metabolism. The research focused on adults who initially ate too few fruits and vegetables. All 42 participants were guided to increase their intake to five servings per day. Some also added a daily glass of pure fruit juice or a smoothie to their routine.

After four weeks, those who consumed the drinks saw their depression scores drop by 2.52 points on average. The study linked these benefits to the high levels of vitamins, antioxidants, and bioactive compounds found in juices and smoothies. These substances help reduce inflammation and oxidative stress, both of which play a role in depression. Importantly, the extra sugar from the drinks did not negatively affect blood sugar levels or metabolism. Participants still received plenty of fibre from whole fruits and vegetables, ensuring a balanced diet.

The findings suggest that small dietary adjustments, like drinking fruit juice or smoothies, may support mental well-being. The study’s authors highlight that increasing fruit and vegetable intake—whether through whole foods or drinks—could be a simple way to help manage depression symptoms. No adverse effects on health were reported during the four-week trial.
