Lower Saxony: Customs uncovers illegal moonshine distillery in a house again - Deadly moonshine bust exposes illegal spirit production in Germany

Customs officers have dismantled an illegal moonshine operation in Cloppenburg. The raid follows earlier discoveries of unlicensed distilleries in Friesland district last December. Authorities warn that homemade spirits can contain deadly toxins like methanol.

In December, customs agents uncovered four illegal stills and large quantities of alcohol in Friesland. Two men from Sande and Schortens were linked to the operation. Investigators seized two makeshift stills and around 60 litres of high-proof alcohol during the latest raid in Cloppenburg.

The 68-year-old homeowner now faces tax evasion charges for producing spirits without a licence. German law prohibits unlicensed distillation, even for personal use. Poorly made alcohol can contain methanol, which attacks the nervous system and may cause blindness, respiratory failure, or even death.

Improvised stills often produce dangerous levels of flammable methanol and other harmful byproducts. Authorities stress that consuming unregulated spirits poses serious health risks, including brain swelling and circulatory collapse.

The raids highlight ongoing efforts to crack down on illegal alcohol production. Unlicensed stills remain a public safety concern due to toxic contamination risks. Those caught face criminal charges, including tax evasion and endangering public health.
