Deformed Seal Pup Finds Hope After Rescue from Certain Euthanasia

A seal pup with a severely deformed face was taken in by the Tulen Rehabilitation Center on March 16. The animal's unusual condition—including a crooked nose, damaged cheek, and an inability to close its mouth—prompted immediate concern from staff.

When the pup arrived, vets discovered a large amount of sand packed inside its mouth. The center initially suspected a mix of trauma and a possible genetic defect. Normally, such cases lead to euthanasia, as affected seals cannot survive in the wild.

The team, however, decided against this option. Instead, they secured a preliminary agreement for the pup's lifelong care, though the exact details remain undisclosed. The seal's only functioning nostril has since widened, helping it adapt to its condition. Staff chose to give the animal time to recover rather than resort to extreme measures. Their decision ensured the pup would not face immediate euthanasia, despite standard veterinary guidelines.

The seal pup has now survived and will receive long-term care. The center's arrangement guarantees its future, even though it will never be released into the wild. No further public details about the case have been shared.
