Doctors Remove 2kg Uterine Fibroid in Rare Laparoscopic Surgery

A woman in Novorossiysk has undergone a rare laparoscopic procedure to remove an unusually large uterine fibroid. The mass, measuring 25 centimetres and weighing nearly two kilograms, caused her severe abdominal pain. Doctors at the city's Perinatal Center performed the complex surgery successfully.

The patient had endured persistent pain for months before seeking help. Instead of medical treatment, she relied on painkillers to manage the symptoms. By the time she arrived at the hospital, the fibroid had grown to an extreme size, leading to complications that threatened her reproductive health.

The surgical team opted for a minimally invasive approach, despite the fibroid's unusual dimensions. Laparoscopic techniques are rarely used for masses of this scale, as most cases require open surgery. The procedure was completed without issues, and the woman experienced rapid relief from her symptoms within hours.

No official records exist on how often such large fibroids are treated laparoscopically in Russia. Data from the last five years (2021–2025) remains unavailable, making this case particularly notable.

The successful operation highlights the potential of advanced laparoscopic methods for treating severe fibroid cases. The patient's delayed treatment underscores the risks of ignoring persistent gynaecological symptoms. Her recovery is now being monitored by specialists at the Perinatal Center.
