Elena Malysheva warns against reckless magnesium supplement self-prescribing in Russia
Elena Malysheva, a well-known Russian physician and TV presenter, has spoken out against the growing trend of self-prescribing magnesium supplements. She described the practice as 'reckless self-experimentation' and warned of potential health risks for those taking the supplements without proper medical advice.
Over the past five years, magnesium supplement use in Russia has surged, with market growth of 15–20% annually. The increase follows rising health awareness during the COVID-19 pandemic, stress from the Ukraine conflict since 2022, and government-backed campaigns promoting dietary supplements. Urban areas like Moscow and St. Petersburg have seen the highest consumption rates.
Malysheva stressed that true magnesium deficiency is uncommon and usually tied to serious digestive conditions causing electrolyte loss. She pointed out that most people already receive sufficient magnesium through everyday foods such as potatoes, buckwheat, rice, and leafy greens. The doctor strongly advised against self-medication, urging viewers to consult a physician before taking supplements. She emphasised the need for a confirmed diagnosis and lab tests to avoid unnecessary risks, particularly for those with pre-existing health issues.
Malysheva's warnings come as magnesium supplement use continues to climb in Russia. Her recommendations highlight the importance of medical supervision before starting any new dietary supplement. Without proper guidance, unnecessary intake could pose avoidable health dangers.
