Elkton's only maternity ward closes, leaving expectant mothers scrambling for care
The Family Birth Center at Union Hospital in Elkton will shut its doors on June 30th. Run by ChristianaCare, the closure leaves expectant mothers like Kasey Conner searching for new delivery options. County officials and residents have raised concerns over the lack of local maternal healthcare services.
Kasey Conner, a first-time mother, had planned to give birth at the Union Hospital center. She had already formed bonds with the staff there. Now, she must look elsewhere, likely choosing Christiana Hospital in Delaware—13 miles away—despite her unease about the change.
ChristianaCare cited an ageing population and workforce shortages as reasons for the closure. The decision will also cost 31 providers their jobs, including two doctors and 26 nurses. Cecil County Executive Adam Streight criticised the organisation for poor communication and coordination throughout the process. A public hearing has been arranged to address the closure and explore possible solutions. It will take place on June 11th at 5 pm at the Comfort Inn in North East, Maryland. For now, the nearest alternatives for labour and delivery remain Christiana Hospital or Upper Chesapeake Hospital in Harford County, nearly an hour’s drive away. Conner still hopes for better maternal healthcare options in Cecil County. While she prepares to deliver at Christiana Hospital, she worries about the impact on other women in the area.
The Family Birth Center’s closure leaves expectant mothers with fewer local choices. The public hearing on June 11th may provide clarity on next steps. Until then, women like Conner will need to travel further for care, and 31 healthcare workers will face job losses.
