Endangered sea turtles fight for survival after life-saving rescue and treatment

Two endangered sea turtles, Alfonzo and Sawyer, have received specialist care at Mississippi State University's College of Veterinary Medicine. The animals were rescued with severe injuries and are now undergoing long-term treatment. Their recovery will depend on ongoing medical assessments.

Alfonzo, a green sea turtle, was found with fishing hooks lodged in its flipper and digestive system. Advanced CT scans at MSU pinpointed the exact location of the hooks, helping vets plan further treatment.

Sawyer, a Kemp's ridley sea turtle, arrived with multiple health issues. These included a missing front flipper, lung damage, bacterial infections, and parasites. Both turtles are now receiving extended care through a collaboration between MSU and the Institute for Marine Mammal Studies.

Their treatment will continue based on regular clinical evaluations. The partnership ensures the animals have access to specialised imaging and veterinary expertise.

The turtles' recovery remains tied to their progress under close medical supervision. Alfonzo's embedded hooks and Sawyer's complex infections will require time and targeted care. The joint effort between the university and marine institute aims to stabilise their conditions over the coming months.
