The number of women diagnosed with endometriosis in Germany has risen sharply over the past two decades. In 2005, around 230,000 cases were recorded, but by 2024, that figure had climbed to over 510,000. New research highlights how location, diagnostic improvements, and updated guidelines are shaping detection rates across the country.
Endometriosis is a chronic condition where tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the womb. It can cause severe pain, inflammation, scarring, and fertility problems. Complications often include bleeding outside the uterus, long-term abdominal discomfort, and a higher risk of mental health issues like depression and anxiety.
The Barmer Physicians' Report analysed data from roughly eight million insured individuals each year between 2005 and 2024. Findings show that diagnoses have more than doubled in that period. Improved diagnostic techniques now allow for earlier and more frequent detection.
Between 2015 and 2024, the average age at first diagnosis fell by nearly four years. Despite updated clinical guidelines introduced in 2023, the typical age at diagnosis remains between 30 and 35. No significant shift is expected until new epidemiological data emerges after 2026.
Where a woman lives also plays a role. Thuringia reports around 20% fewer initial diagnoses than the national average, while Saarland sees roughly 20% more. Urban areas record higher diagnosis rates compared to rural regions. The updated guidelines now encourage less invasive procedures, which may reduce hospitalisations linked to the condition.
The rise in endometriosis diagnoses reflects both better awareness and improved medical techniques. Women in cities and certain regions are more likely to receive an early diagnosis. With ongoing advancements, detection rates may continue to change in the coming years.
