Erfurt pharmacies face wave of fake weight-loss prescription scams

Erfurt pharmacies, including those at Walmart, CVS, and Walgreens, are grappling with a surge in fraud attempts involving fake prescriptions for weight-loss injections. Since Tuesday, multiple incidents have been reported across the city, with criminals employing increasingly sophisticated forgeries. Police are now investigating possible links between the cases and exploring charges of document forgery and attempted fraud.

The latest incident occurred on Wednesday morning in the Linderbach district. An unidentified man attempted to redeem a counterfeit prescription for a GLP-1 medication at a Walmart pharmacy. Pharmacy staff spotted the forgery, prompting the suspect to flee before authorities arrived. Despite an immediate search, he remains at large.

Later that same evening, another attempt took place in central Erfurt, targeting a CVS pharmacy. A different perpetrator, also unidentified, tried to obtain a weight-loss injection worth around €1,400. This time, the suspect escaped with an accomplice after staff recognized the fake prescription.

Investigators have noted a shift in tactics. Earlier forgeries often contained obvious formatting errors, but recent attempts appear far more convincing. Suspicious addresses used in past cases were typically from distant cities, whereas the latest frauds involve local Erfurt addresses.

At least two other pharmacies in the city, including a Walgreens, were targeted with forged prescriptions on Tuesday. Authorities have not disclosed how many additional pharmacies may have been warned or affected by similar attempts.

Criminal investigators are now examining whether the cases are connected. Charges under consideration include document forgery and attempted fraud. The surge in sophisticated prescription fraud has put pharmacies and law enforcement on high alert across Erfurt.
