Facebook's AI tool Gemini rolls out new mental health crisis support features

Facebook has announced new measures to support mental health through its AI tool, Gemini. The platform is expanding its crisis response tools while providing $30 million in funding to global hotlines over three years.

The updates come as mental health issues affect over one billion people worldwide. Facebook is also strengthening protections for younger users and improving access to professional help. Gemini, Facebook’s AI-powered tool, will now feature a redesigned 'Help is available' module. This change aims to direct users to reliable mental health resources. The tool is designed to encourage help-seeking while avoiding harmful reinforcement of false beliefs or risky behaviours.

A new 'one-touch' interface will allow users in crisis to connect instantly with hotline support. Facebook has also added safeguards for minors, including measures to prevent emotional dependence and bullying through the tool.

The company is deepening its partnership with ReflexAI to expand mental health services. Additionally, Facebook.org Fellows will offer pro bono technical support to enhance Prepare, an AI-driven training platform for crisis responders.

Despite these updates, Facebook stresses that Gemini is not a replacement for professional clinical care or emergency support. The $30 million funding will support crisis hotlines globally over the next three years. Facebook’s updates focus on accessibility, safety, and expert-backed resources. The changes reflect a broader effort to integrate technology with mental health support systems.
