Florida woman uncovers $10,000 in Medicare fraud on her statement

A Florida woman has uncovered thousands of dollars in fraudulent Medicare charges on her latest statement. Cindy Kovalchuk noticed over $10,000 billed for catheters she never ordered or received. The case highlights an ongoing issue where taxpayers end up paying for medical fraud. Kovalchuk first spotted suspicious charges on her Medicare statement in December. She reported them immediately to the fraud hotline at 1-800-Medicare (1-800-633-4227). Yet, by March, another set of false claims appeared—this time for more than $10,000.

The latest fraudulent billing came from a medical device supplier in Coral Gables, Florida. Kovalchuk never requested the catheters listed on her statement. She has now demanded Medicare take action against the company responsible. Medicare fraud remains a widespread problem. In 2023 alone, US authorities recorded 26,579 fraud reports, mostly investigated by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Inspector General. The government also offers financial rewards to those who report fraudulent activity.

Kovalchuk's case adds to the growing number of Medicare fraud incidents. The charges, if left unchallenged, would have cost taxpayers thousands. Authorities continue to urge beneficiaries to review statements carefully and report any irregularities.
