As of December 18, 2025, Frankfurt am Main stands out with five maternity units. Major hospitals like Universitätsklinikum Frankfurt, Städtische Kliniken Frankfurt-Sachsenhausen, and Agaplesion Markus Krankenhaus contribute to this total. Official data from the Hessisches Landesamt für Gesundheit und Pflege confirms the city's position as the top provider in the state.
Wiesbaden and Gießen, along with the Main-Kinzig district, each maintain three maternity facilities. Meanwhile, Fulda, Darmstadt, Offenbach, and Kassel—along with the districts of Schwalm-Eder and Waldeck-Frankenberg—have two facilities each. Several other areas, such as Offenbach, Bergstraße, and Groß-Gerau, operate just one ward per district.
Despite this coverage, gaps remain. No maternity facilities exist in the districts of Darmstadt-Dieburg, Rheingau-Taunus, or Vogelsberg. The decline since 2015 has left some regions with limited access to local birthing services.
The latest figures highlight Frankfurt's dominance in maternity care within Hesse. With 39 facilities still active, the state has seen a steady reduction in options over the past ten years. Expectant parents in certain districts now face longer travel times due to the absence of nearby facilities.
