Free health outreach in Ghana uncovers hidden medical crises among 300 residents

A free health outreach in Domeabra Amponsahene has provided essential medical services to nearly 300 residents. Organised by Health Enhancement and Access Link (HEAL), the event included screenings, education, and medication support. Many attendees received their first-ever health checks during the programme.

The outreach, held in the Eastern Region, uncovered several health issues among participants. Conditions such as urticaria, dermatitis, and diarrhoea were detected, alongside more serious cases of anaemia, malaria, and hypertensive crises. Some attendees also showed signs of hyperglycaemia, raising concerns about diabetes management.

Many of those screened had stopped taking prescribed medications for hypertension and diabetes. Financial difficulties and poor health-seeking habits were cited as key reasons for the lapses. In response, HEAL provided free medications and assisted with National Health Insurance Scheme registrations and renewals.

Dr Emmanuel Anim, founder of HEAL, urged Ghanaians to prioritise health during Christmas celebrations. He advised reducing intake of oily and processed foods to lower the risk of lifestyle diseases. He also thanked the Domeabra Traditional Authority and other supporters for making the outreach possible.

Nana Adwoa Ohene, Gyantuahemaa of Domeabra, emphasised the community's commitment to residents' well-being. Some beneficiaries shared that the event was their first experience with health screening, expressing gratitude for the services.

The outreach highlighted gaps in healthcare access and medication adherence within the community. Dr Anim called on the government and corporate bodies to expand similar initiatives to other regions. The event provided immediate relief while stressing the need for long-term health support.
