Freiburg Hosts Free Eye Health Event on Glaucoma and AMD

A free public event on eye health will take place in Freiburg on Tuesday, April 14, 2026. Organised by specialists from Freiburg University Hospital, the evening will cover common conditions like glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). No registration is needed to attend. The event runs from 6 to 7 p.m. in the lecture hall on Killianstraße. Experts will discuss how diseases such as AMD and glaucoma develop and affect vision. AMD distorts or blurs sight by damaging the retina, while glaucoma harms the optic nerve, often leading to gradual loss of peripheral vision.

Many eye problems go unnoticed until they become severe. The specialists will highlight the importance of regular check-ups and recognising early warning signs. They will also explain modern treatments, including minimally invasive glaucoma surgery and advanced therapies for AMD. For AMD, current and emerging treatments extend beyond anti-VEGF injections. Researchers are exploring gene therapies, such as mRNA-based methods and gene editing, to correct defects or restore cell function. Other approaches include longer-lasting injections, investigations into the complement system, and neuroprotective strategies to slow disease progression.

The evening aims to raise awareness about eye health and the latest medical options. Attendees will leave with a clearer understanding of how to detect and manage common vision-threatening conditions. The session is open to all, with no prior sign-up required.
