From a humble campsite to a global wellness empire: The story of Rancho La Puerta

What began as a modest campsite in Mexico has grown into one of the world's most famous health retreats. In 1940, Edmond and Deborah Szekely settled on a small plot near Tecate, naming it Rancho La Puerta. At first, guests paid just US $17.50 a night and had to bring their own tents.

Edmond Szekely, a Jewish Hungarian philosopher, married 17-year-old Deborah in California in 1939. A year later, the couple moved to Mexico after both Hungary and Romania refused to renew Edmond's documents, insisting he return. With no legal status, they lived in a two-room adobe hut and could not own land.

During World War II, the U.S. policy required non-citizens to be returned to their home countries if their papers expired. Fearing deportation, Edmond began giving lectures on health and nutrition at the ranch. Meanwhile, Deborah started a school to teach her employees how to read and write.

The turning point came in 1949 when Edmond became a Mexican citizen. This allowed the family to legally own Rancho La Puerta. Over the decades, the property transformed from a simple campsite into a world-renowned health and fitness spa.

In 2005, the family established the Fundación La Puerta in Tecate. The foundation has since restored over 1,000 hectares of land and educated thousands of students through school gardens and workshops. Projects include reforestation, rainwater harvesting, community permaculture farms, and biodiversity conservation in the Sierra Juárez region.

Rancho La Puerta's journey from a basic campsite to a leading wellness retreat reflects its founders' resilience and vision. The Fundación La Puerta continues to expand environmental and educational initiatives, ensuring the ranch's legacy extends beyond fitness into long-term sustainability for the region.
