From Ancient Remedies to Modern Kitchens: The Surprising Power of Mustard

Mustard has been a staple in kitchens and medicine cabinets for centuries. First mentioned in ancient civilizations, it later became a popular seasoning thanks to the Romans. Today, it remains a versatile condiment with a range of health benefits—but experts warn against overusing it.

The earliest written record of mustard appears in the Bible, where it was used for both food and healing. By 1781, Russian scholar Andrey Timofeyevich Bolotov documented its presence in Russia. The Romans were the first to turn it into a paste, spreading its use across Europe and beyond.

Modern varieties include table mustard, Bavarian sweet mustard, Dijon, French mustard, and ground white mustard. Each type offers distinct flavours, making it a flexible addition to meals.

Mustard contains vitamins A, B, C, E, and K, along with minerals and essential amino acids. Studies suggest it can help with weight management, lower cholesterol, and strengthen the immune system. It may also relieve bloating, support heart health, and ease menstrual discomfort. Some even use it to treat infections, improve blood flow to the brain, or soothe sore vocal cords.

For most healthy people, 1-3 spoonfuls a day is considered safe. However, those with gastrointestinal issues, kidney disease, tuberculosis, or cardiovascular problems should avoid it. The same applies to anyone breastfeeding or with a known allergy.

To keep mustard paste fresh, store it in the fridge—it will last about two months without preservatives. Mustard powder stays usable for at least a year if kept in a dark place at around 20°C.

Mustard's long history stretches from ancient remedies to modern condiments. While it offers many health benefits, moderation is key to avoiding side effects. Proper storage ensures it stays fresh, whether as a paste or powder.
