From Rendsburg to Kokorou: German Doctor Elected King in Africa - From German Surgeon to Niger's New King: A Remarkable Coronation

A former German surgeon has been crowned king of a province in Niger. Dr Issifi Djibey, 75, was elected as the traditional ruler of Kokorou on a Sunday, following the death of the previous monarch. The city of Rendsburg, where Djibey worked for decades, has already sent its congratulations.

Djibey first arrived in Germany in 1970 after receiving a scholarship from Kokorou to study medicine. He later became head of vascular and thoracic surgery at Rendsburg Hospital, a position he held until his election as king.

The new monarch is one of several legitimate heirs to the throne, which had been held for 52 years by the late king. Though the role carries significant local influence, it is not an absolute monarchy. Djibey has announced plans to build a royal residence in Kokorou as one of his first official acts.

Despite his royal duties, he intends to spend much of his time in Germany with his family. To manage his absence, he will appoint a regent to oversee affairs in Niger. His priorities for Kokorou include expanding infrastructure, modernising agriculture and improving healthcare.

Djibey's election marks a new chapter for Kokorou, with a ruler who brings decades of medical expertise. His plans for development will now depend on balancing responsibilities between Germany and Niger. The city of Rendsburg has publicly expressed confidence in his leadership.
