German Startup Klar2O Raises €4.5M to Revolutionize Water Filtration Tech

A German startup has secured €4.5 million to expand its advanced water filtration technology. Klar2O, based in Bruchsal, developed a system that removes microplastics, nanoplastics, and harmful 'forever chemicals' from drinking water. The funding will help scale production and enter global markets in 2024. Recent studies revealed alarming levels of plastic contamination in bottled water. In 2024, researchers found an average of 240,000 plastic fragments per litre, with 90% being nanoplastics smaller than one micrometre. These tiny particles have also been detected in human blood, urine, and organs—even in the brains of deceased Alzheimer’s patients.

Klar2O’s patented Smart Surface Technology tackles this issue with a unique approach. Unlike traditional filters, it combines strong adsorption with minimal pressure loss. The system selectively binds nanoplastics while using little energy. Its regenerable and recyclable design further enhances sustainability. The €4.5 million Series A round was led by FMC Beteiligungs KG Bremen. With this investment, Klar2O plans to boost manufacturing and introduce its filters internationally. The company aims to set a new benchmark for clean drinking water.

The funding will accelerate production of Klar2O’s recyclable filters. Their technology targets microplastics, nanoplastics, and PFAS—contaminants linked to serious health risks. If successful, the system could reshape standards for water purity in homes and industries.
