How do train attendants calm aggressive passengers? - German train conductors face rising aggression from passengers amid safety training push

Train conductors in Germany are facing more aggression from passengers. Incidents have risen sharply, with over 1,200 recorded cases of hostility in 2023 alone. Now, special seminars are teaching staff how to handle tense situations safely.

The death of conductor Serkan Çalar in February 2023 highlighted the growing risks. Since then, Deutsche Bahn has reported between 1,100 and 1,300 aggressive incidents each year. Trainers now focus on preparing conductors for worst-case scenarios.

In de-escalation workshops, conductors practise keeping their distance and controlling their body language. They learn to read facial expressions and trust their instincts before engaging with difficult passengers. Role-playing exercises simulate real threats, helping staff stay calm under pressure.

Axel Meyer, a train conductor, described one such drill as intensely oppressive. Trainers advise staff not to take insults personally and to disengage early. The goal is to avoid emotional reactions and defuse conflicts before they escalate.

Conductors now receive regular training to spot warning signs and respond effectively. By using tone of voice, positioning, and quick assessments, they aim to reduce confrontations. The hope is that these skills will make journeys safer for both staff and passengers.
