Germany plans sweeping bans on disposable vapes and menthol flavors

The German government is pushing for stricter controls on e-cigarettes, with a focus on disposable products. Federal Environment Minister Carsten Schneider has proposed a complete ban on single-use vapes, while Food and Agriculture Minister Alois Rainer targets specific flavour additives.

Environment Minister Carsten Schneider called for a ban on disposable e-cigarettes, arguing they contribute to waste and underage use. His proposal also includes tighter rules on how these products are sold and marketed.

Separately, Agriculture Minister Alois Rainer announced plans to prohibit 13 flavour and cooling additives, including menthol. The move aims to reduce the appeal of vaping, particularly among younger users. Industry representatives have warned that such bans would mainly affect legal businesses, potentially driving consumers toward the unregulated black market instead.

If approved, the new measures would mark a significant shift in Germany’s approach to e-cigarettes. The proposed bans on disposable devices and certain flavours would take effect alongside stricter distribution rules. Officials insist the changes are necessary to curb youth vaping and environmental harm.
