A walkable brain? New exhibition house coming - Germany's bold new addiction centre merges art, science, and interaction

A first-of-its-kind exhibition centre focused on addiction is set to open in Erfurt. The World of Temptations Foundation plans to build the facility, which will combine art, science, and interactive experiences. Nearly 21.2 million German adults currently face dependency issues, according to government figures.

The foundation aims to start construction in 2023, with archaeological surveys beginning in spring. Funding comes from Germany's Federal Ministry of Health, and the centre is expected to open by autumn 2027.

The heart of the exhibition will be the Brain Space, featuring an interactive brain model and possibly a walk-through exhibit. This section will explore how addiction affects the brain. Beyond this, the centre will host permanent and rotating displays, art installations, and hands-on activities.

An earlier preview of the foundation's approach—a cannabis-focused exhibition—drew around 4,000 visitors. The new centre will also include an Innovation Hub, designed as a collaborative space for researchers and healthcare professionals. However, no specific institutions have yet been named as partners for this initiative.

The exhibition centre will address a broad range of dependencies, from alcohol and drugs to social media. By blending education, research, and public engagement, it aims to raise awareness and foster new solutions. The project marks a significant step in tackling addiction through both science and creative approaches.
