Germany's First Loop-X Imaging Robot Revolutionizes Spine and Orthopaedic Surgeries
Wolfsburg Municipal Hospital has become the first in Germany to introduce the Loop-X imaging robot combined with Curve navigation technology. The cutting-edge system, acquired with nearly one million euros of investment, will transform spine, orthopaedic, and trauma surgeries. Officials say it marks a major step forward for precision and patient safety. The Loop-X robot generates real-time 2D and 3D scans during operations, linking them with navigation systems for millimetre-accurate placement of screws and implants. Its mobility allows flexible use across different operating rooms, reducing strain on surgical teams and cutting radiation exposure for patients and staff.
Prof. Dr. Klaus Zweckberger, head of neurotrauma and spine surgery, called the technology a milestone for minimally invasive procedures on delicate structures. He highlighted its ability to improve accuracy while lowering risks. Meanwhile, Dr. Alexander Wegner, chief physician of trauma, orthopaedic, and hand surgery, noted that precise control imaging eliminates many post-operative checks, speeding up recovery and easing patient burden.
The system will primarily serve spine surgeries but will also support orthopaedic and trauma procedures, such as pelvic operations. Hospital leaders, including managing director André Koch, thanked the city of Wolfsburg and the state for funding the project. Mayor Dennis Weilmann stressed that the investment reinforces the city's commitment to advancing medical innovation.
Prof. Dr. Nils Homann, the hospital's medical director, described the launch as a strong signal to young doctors and students. He believes it positions Wolfsburg as a forward-thinking hub for modern medicine. The Loop-X system enables gentler, faster, and safer surgeries with less blood loss and reduced radiation. As the only hospital in Germany using this combined technology, Wolfsburg Municipal Hospital expects it to enhance treatment outcomes and attract medical professionals. The nearly one-million-euro investment underscores the region's focus on cutting-edge healthcare.
