Germany's Push for Clearer Doctor's Office Accessibility Standards Gains Momentum

A public petition is calling for clearer information on the accessibility standards of doctor's offices across Germany. The campaign highlights the difficulties faced by people with mobility impairments when trying to find suitable medical care. This week, the Petitions Committee took a step forward by backing the request.

The petition argues that patients need easily accessible details about whether a practice is wheelchair-friendly or meets other accessibility standards. Currently, many people struggle to locate this information before booking appointments. Unlike pharmacies, which have been legally required to ensure accessibility for over ten years, doctor's offices face no such rules.

The Petitions Committee reviewed the request and unanimously agreed to forward it to the Federal Ministry of Health (BMG). In its recommendation, the committee noted that responsibility for outpatient care lies with regional and national associations of statutory health insurance physicians. However, no official data exists on how many practices in Germany have documented their accessibility.

The BMG has already pledged to address the issue. Its December 2024 Action Plan includes a commitment to providing comprehensive information on the accessibility standards of medical practices.

The petition will now be reviewed by the Federal Ministry of Health. If adopted, the changes could make it easier for patients to identify accessible doctor's offices. The outcome may also influence future regulations for medical practices across the country.
