North demands energy drink ban for children and young people - Germany's Schleswig-Holstein Pushes to Ban Energy Drinks for Under-16s
Schleswig-Holstein's government is calling for a nationwide ban on selling energy drinks to anyone under 16. The proposal also seeks to limit advertising aimed at young people. Health officials warn that even a single can can pose serious risks to children and teenagers.
Energy drinks contain high amounts of caffeine, sugar, and stimulants like taurine and guarana. The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) states that just one can exceeds the recommended caffeine limit for young people. Consuming these drinks can lead to rapid heartbeat, high blood pressure, and other cardiovascular problems—especially when mixed with alcohol or strenuous exercise.
The motion argues for stricter health protections for minors. If passed, it would prohibit sales to under-16s and restrict marketing targeting them. Unlike some European countries, Germany currently has no uniform age restrictions on energy drink purchases.
Experts highlight that teenagers can experience harmful effects after drinking just one can. The risks increase when combined with physical activity or other stimulants. The proposed ban aims to reduce these dangers by cutting off easy access for young consumers.
The push for a ban follows growing concerns over the health impacts of energy drinks on young people. If approved, the law would mark a significant step in regulating their sale and promotion. Other European nations, including France, Norway, and Austria, have not introduced similar age-based restrictions.
