Gifhorn's newest volunteers step up as DUO Senior Companions

Thirteen new volunteers in Gifhorn have just completed training to become DUO Senior Companions. The programme pairs them with older adults who need support in daily life. Their help comes at no cost and is tailored to each person's needs.

The latest group finished a six-day course to prepare for their roles. Now, the first matches between companions and seniors are already underway.

DUO Senior Companions offer practical and social assistance to older residents across Gifhorn. They can accompany seniors to medical appointments or help with tasks like shopping. The service is free and designed to fit individual requirements.

The programme began in 2022, and since then, over 50 volunteers have been trained. Currently, around 25 companions are active across the district. Openings for new pairings remain in Wittingen, Gifhorn, Hankensbüttel, Brome, Meinersen, Wesendorf, and Papenteich.

Each volunteer undergoes thorough preparation before starting. The recent group completed six days of training to ensure they can provide reliable support. Now, organisers are arranging the first meetings between the newly trained companions and the seniors they will assist.

The expanded team of companions will help more older adults stay independent and connected. Free support is now available in multiple towns across the district. Residents in need of assistance can still apply for the service.
