Hundreds of genetic variants were tied to this broad liability, alongside substance-specific genes. For example, some genes influence alcohol metabolism, while others affect nicotine receptors. The team also developed polygenic scores to predict general addiction risk and drug-specific vulnerabilities.

The research involved an international group of scientists and received funding from multiple institutions. It connects the broad externalizing pathway to traits like ADHD, impulsivity, and risk-taking. These insights could help tailor prevention strategies and treatments based on individual genetic profiles.

The findings highlight the role of shared genetic factors in addiction across different substances. By identifying both broad and substance-specific risks, the study opens avenues for more precise interventions.
