Hamburg firefighter critically burned after falling into boiling water shaft

A firefighter in Hamburg suffered severe burns during an emergency call in Altona on Monday. The incident happened while crews were dealing with a damaged water pipe in a building's basement. Another worker at the scene also sustained injuries from scalding water.

The firefighter fell into an open inspection shaft filled with boiling water. The accident occurred as teams responded to a burst pipe in the basement. Paramedics treated the injured man before rushing him to the general hospital in stable condition.

A tradesman working nearby also suffered scalding to his hands. He received immediate care from emergency responders. Around 20 firefighters and paramedics were involved in the operation.

Hamburg's fire chief, Oberbranddirektor Sauermann, later arrived to inspect the scene. Following the incident, critical incident stress debriefing was made available to all personnel involved.

The firefighter remains in the hospital, with no current risk to his life. The tradesman's injuries were treated on-site. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the pipe failure and the circumstances of the accident.
