Helium Balloon Nearly Kills 5-Year-Old, Leaving Lifelong Brain Damage

A family is warning parents about the dangers of helium balloons after a near-fatal accident in 2022. Five-year-old Karlton Noah Donaghey suffered severe brain damage when a balloon covered his face, cutting off his oxygen supply. His sister, Kaitlin Donaghey, now urges families to avoid buying them altogether.

The incident happened on 23 June 2022. Karlton had been swimming in the pool before going inside, where his mother later found him unresponsive. A helium balloon had sealed over his face, blocking his airway.

His 29-year-old sister, Kaitlin, performed CPR and called emergency services. Karlton was rushed to hospital but remained in critical condition for six days. Doctors confirmed he had suffered irreversible brain damage from oxygen deprivation. Helium can displace oxygen in seconds, leading to unconsciousness, brain injury, or death by suffocation. While no severe cases involving children have been medically recorded in Germany between 2021 and 2025, the risk remains. Kaitlin now recommends air-filled balloons as a far safer choice for celebrations.

Karlton's case highlights how quickly helium balloons can become deadly. His family continues to raise awareness, stressing that even a brief lack of oxygen can cause lifelong harm. Air-filled alternatives remove the risk while keeping celebrations just as festive.
