Hesse's New Initiative Eases Teacher Stress with Expert Support
A new initiative in Hesse is helping teachers cope with stress and student behavioural challenges. The Hessian Competence Center for Healthy Schools (HKGS), launched in March, offers psychological counselling and training sessions tailored for educators. Around 800 teaching professionals have already attended its online seminars led by psychotherapists from the University of Marburg. The HKGS was set up to support teacher well-being through science-backed resources and direct counselling. Educators can book sessions via the HKGS website, choosing between phone, video, or in-person meetings. The programme also addresses student mental health, covering topics like anxiety, depression, and aggressive behaviour in children and adolescents.
An ongoing training series, developed with the German Center for Mental Health (DZPG), provides strategies for handling classroom challenges. The next online session, scheduled for June 18, will focus on managing difficult parent-teacher conversations. Education Minister Armin Schwarz noted that the practical training helps teachers feel more confident and less stressed in their daily work. Beyond online seminars, the initiative includes on-site counselling and prevention programmes for students. These efforts form part of a wider push to improve mental well-being across schools in the region.
The HKGS programme continues to expand, with hundreds of educators already participating. Future sessions will tackle more aspects of student behaviour and teacher resilience. The initiative remains open to all teaching professionals seeking support.
