This shift changed the production of short-chain fatty acids, which act as key signalling molecules between the gut and brain. These acids support the 'gut-brain' axis, a communication network linking digestive health to mental state. The researchers stressed that controlling the diet of lab mice is essential for reliable studies on human diseases. Their results suggest that dietary adjustments could play a vital role in medical research, particularly in understanding and preventing mental health disorders.
