Experts now advise cutting back on added sugars—but not all sugars are equally harmful.
Sugar affects the body in different ways depending on how it's consumed. Natural sugars in fruits, vegetables, and milk come with fibre, vitamins, and minerals, which slow absorption and reduce harm. In contrast, white sugar and high-fructose corn syrup provide empty calories with no nutritional benefit. These refined sugars spike blood glucose, leading to energy crashes and stronger cravings.
Drinking sugary beverages on an empty stomach worsens the problem. When sugar is consumed alone, the body absorbs it too quickly, straining the liver and metabolism. Even fruit juices and excessive honey can overload the system with fructose, contributing to fatty liver, insulin resistance, and belly fat. Studies published between 2018 and 2024, including a major review in the Journal of Hepatology, found that daily fructose intake above 50g significantly increases liver fat and worsens insulin function.
Long-term effects of high sugar intake are severe. It raises inflammation, damages blood vessels, and weakens nerves over time. In children, excess sugar can cause obesity, tooth decay, and early signs of insulin resistance. For older adults, the risks are even greater, as their bodies handle sugar less efficiently. Chronic overconsumption has been tied to weight gain, diabetes, heart disease, joint pain, weakened immunity, and faster ageing.
Health guidelines now focus on reducing added sugars rather than cutting out sugar entirely. Small amounts consumed with meals are less harmful than sugary drinks or snacks eaten alone. The evidence is clear: lowering fructose and refined sugar intake can prevent liver damage, improve metabolism, and reduce the risk of long-term diseases.
