How Luxury Resorts Are Redefining Wellness Tourism With Science and Serenity
Wellness tourism has evolved into a global phenomenon, transforming how people travel. Many now seek destinations that offer both physical and mental rejuvenation. This shift has led to the rise of specialised retreats blending medical expertise with personalised programs.
The demand for structured yet effective wellness routines has given rise to a variety of approaches—from strict fasting regimens to relaxed Mediterranean-inspired stays.
Three decades ago, Chiva-Som in Thailand pioneered medical wellness. The resort combined spa treatments, fitness, physiotherapy, holistic health, nutrition, and aesthetics into a cohesive philosophy. Five years later, it expanded into the Middle East with its first resort in Qatar.
Vivamayr, an Austrian Medical Health Resort, takes a stricter approach. Guests follow a disciplined routine focused on gut health and intermittent fasting, with meals limited to tea, small soups, and occasional spelt cake. The aim is to give the digestive system a break. The brand has since opened day clinics in Vienna and London, catering to those seeking structured well-being.
At Spain’s Sha Wellness Clinic, the atmosphere is more relaxed. Founded by Alfredo Bataller Parietti after his own health scare, the clinic follows the Sha Principle—a mix of macrobiotic nutrition, movement, natural therapies, and advanced treatments. The setting is laid-back, with a focus on Mediterranean cuisine. José Miguel Martínez Fuerte later became involved as the clinic’s founder in L'Albir.
Meanwhile, rival Lanserhof has also expanded, launching an outpost at London’s Arts Club. Both brands reflect a growing trend: wellness tourism now prioritises safety and measurable results through expert-led, tailored programs.
The wellness market continues to expand, offering everything from strict intermittent fasting to flexible Mediterranean retreats. Resorts like Chiva-Som, Vivamayr, and Sha Clinic have shaped this evolution by blending medical precision with personalised care. As demand grows, more destinations are adapting to meet the needs of travellers seeking both rest and lasting health benefits.
