How Reverend Michael Jackson Reshaped Chicago's Fight for Black Equality
Reverend Michael Jackson has spent decades fighting for economic and political equality for Black Americans. His work in Chicago shaped the city's civil rights movement and boosted Black political power. Born in South Carolina in 1941, he first arrived in Chicago in 1964 as a theology student on a Rockefeller grant.
Jackson began his education at the University of Illinois in 1959 on a scholarship. Two years later, he transferred to North Carolina Agricultural & Technical College. By 1964, he moved to Chicago to study at the Chicago Theological Seminary.
In January 1966, he joined Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. full-time in Chicago. King appointed him to lead Operation Breadbasket, a campaign pushing businesses to hire Black workers. Within 15 months, the effort secured 2,000 new jobs and £15 million in annual income for Chicago's Black community.
Jackson founded Operation PUSH in 1971 to expand economic opportunities nationwide. The organisation built on his earlier work, increasing Black economic and political influence. In 1982, he organised a boycott of ChicagoFest after Mayor Jane Byrne appointed three white members to the Chicago Housing Authority board.
His activism helped elect Harold Washington as Chicago's first Black mayor in 1983. Later, in 1996, Jackson returned to the city and merged Operation PUSH with the National Rainbow Coalition, forming the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition.
Jackson's campaigns in Chicago strengthened Black political representation and economic power. His organisations pushed for fair hiring and greater minority participation in elections. The effects of his work remain visible in the city's political and social landscape today.
