The human body can endure surprising losses and still survive. While roughly 80 organs exist, only five—the brain, lungs, heart, liver, and kidneys—are essential for life. Even then, parts of some can be removed or replaced without fatal consequences.

A person can live with just one kidney, as many living donors prove when giving one to family members. The liver, too, can regenerate after partial removal, though no reliable global data tracks how many have received full or partial transplants since 2010. The brain is more complex: significant portions can be lost, but survival depends on keeping the brainstem intact.

Other organs, like the heart and lungs, can be replaced through transplants or supported by machines. Yet not all life-support systems work long-term—some only buy time before emergency procedures. Blood loss also poses a sharp limit: losing 3-5 litres can be deadly for an adult.

Losing limbs, such as arms or legs, does not threaten life but deeply affects mobility and independence. Unlike organs, limbs cannot be transplanted to restore full function.

Medical advances allow people to survive with fewer organs than once thought possible. Transplants and life-support systems fill gaps where the body cannot recover alone. Still, some losses—like brain damage or severe blood loss—remain critical thresholds that even modern medicine struggles to overcome.
