Hungary's New Social Policy Minister Overcame Blindness to Champion Equal Rights
Hungary’s incoming government has named Vilmos Katai-Németh as the new Minister of Social Policy and Healthcare. The appointment comes after Péter Magyar, leader of the election-winning Tisza party, revealed his cabinet nominees. Katai-Németh, a lawyer and martial arts expert, brings a unique background to the role—despite having lost nearly all his vision as a teenager. Born with full sight, Katai-Németh was diagnosed with retinal atrophy at 16. The hereditary condition left him with just 3% of his vision. Undeterred, he earned a law degree from Pázmány Péter Catholic University in 2007. After graduating, he opened a private practice focused on equal rights cases.
Beyond law, he developed *White Sword*, a self-defence system tailored for the visually impaired. He also became Hungary’s only aikido master, achieving a first-degree black belt. His expertise in martial arts and advocacy for disability rights shaped his public profile. Katai-Németh joined the Tisza party in 2024, marking his first foray into politics. His recent electoral success saw him win over 60% of the vote in Budapest’s 9th District. As minister, his priorities will include expanding access to healthcare, education, and equal opportunities for all citizens.
The new minister’s appointment reflects a shift in Hungary’s political landscape under Péter Magyar’s leadership. Katai-Németh’s legal background, advocacy work, and personal experience with disability will inform his policies. His term begins as the government prepares to implement its social and healthcare reforms.
