Hypnotherapy Emerges as a Game-Changer for Stress-Related IBS Relief
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) often links to mental stress through the gut-brain connection. While medication is a common treatment, it may not always be the most effective for stress-related cases. New research suggests hypnotherapy could offer a better solution for many patients.
Dr. Megan Riehl, a gastroenterologist at the University of Michigan, specialises in how the brain and gut interact. As clinical director of the GI behavioural health programme, she has explored treatments beyond traditional medicine.
A 2015 study co-led by Dr. Riehl found that gut-directed hypnotherapy made a real difference. After 12 weeks, 71% of patients reported improved IBS symptoms, compared to just 20% in the control group. The results were published in *Gastroenterology* and highlighted hypnotherapy's potential. Dr. Riehl has also helped shape transplant and behavioural health programmes at UM Health. Her work integrates hypnotherapy as a recognised method for managing IBS, focusing on healing the mental triggers behind symptoms.
Hypnotherapy now stands as a proven option for stress-induced IBS. The 2015 trial showed clear benefits over standard treatments. With experts like Dr. Riehl leading the way, more patients may soon turn to this approach for long-term relief.
