I-580 shuts down after crisis on Livermore overpass causes gridlock

A major traffic disruption unfolded on Interstate 580 in Livermore on Friday afternoon. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) responded to a person in crisis on an overpass, forcing a full closure of the motorway in both directions. The incident caused extensive delays for drivers heading into the area. The closure started around 2 p.m. when officers engaged with the individual on the overpass. Within hours, eastbound traffic stretched back past Dublin and Pleasanton, reaching as far as Rowell Ranch by 4 p.m. Westbound lanes were also shut, leaving motorists stranded.

Authorities urged drivers to seek alternate routes, suggesting State Route 84 and Interstate 680 as detours to Highway 4. The situation was resolved without incident, and all lanes reopened by 3:52 p.m.

The motorway returned to normal operation before 4 p.m., ending the gridlock. Traffic had built up for miles during the two-hour closure, but no injuries or further disruptions were reported. The CHP confirmed the incident concluded peacefully.
