Inside the Chaos: A Nurse’s 8-Hour Battle in an Overwhelmed ER
Katrin Labusga-Cremer, a 37-year-old nurse, has spent nearly two decades at Evangelisches Krankenhaus (EVK) Duisburg-Nord. She now works in the emergency department, a role she describes as both demanding and deeply fulfilling. The hospital, a regional trauma centre, operates around the clock to treat severe injuries and acute illnesses.
On this particular day, the ER is overwhelmed. With most doctors’ offices closed, patient numbers have surged, pushing the department to its limits.
Labusga-Cremer’s late shift begins at 2 p.m. and runs until 10 p.m., with surgical patients under her care. Dressed in a blue uniform and leopard-print Crocs, she moves through the chaotic environment with focus. The ER follows a triage system, where patients are treated based on urgency rather than arrival time. Colour-coded categories determine who gets seen first.
The nursing hub acts as the department’s control centre. Here, doctors and nurses update records, share critical information, and coordinate with other wards or hospitals. But the job comes with risks. Verbal abuse has become routine, forcing Labusga-Cremer to stay alert and take extra safety measures, especially during night shifts.
Despite the challenges, she thrives on the unpredictability. No two shifts are alike, and the fast-paced nature of emergency care keeps her engaged. For her, nursing isn’t just a job—it’s a calling.
Hospitals across the region, including EVK, are stretched to capacity. Ambulances continue to arrive with new patients, yet no beds remain available. The strain is evident, but the team pushes forward, delivering essential care under pressure.
EVK Duisburg-Nord remains a vital resource for trauma and emergency care, operating 24/7 with specialised surgical support. Labusga-Cremer and her colleagues handle each shift with resilience, despite rising patient numbers and safety concerns. The hospital’s role as a regional trauma centre ensures critical treatment is always within reach.
