Firefighters in Kassel have completed their annual ice rescue training at Lake Buga. With water temperatures hovering at just 4°C, the team practised saving a person trapped after falling through thin ice. The exercise highlights the dangers of frozen lakes and the importance of preparedness during winter months.

The training took place at Bugasee, where firefighters simulated a rescue after someone broke through the ice. Deputy leader Thomas Schmidt of the Kassel Fire Department explained that such drills are essential when lakes freeze over. The team wore specialised suits designed to protect against the cold for up to 30 minutes.

In freezing water, the body quickly loses heat and mobility. Firefighter Maximilian Schade took part in the exercise, demonstrating how rescuers must move carefully to avoid further risk. The procedure involves calling emergency services immediately and using tools to distribute weight while sliding toward the victim.

If a person falls through ice, they should try to grip the edge and pull themselves out, even using fists or elbows if needed. Rescuers must prioritise their own safety and avoid putting themselves in danger. Once the victim is out, they should be wrapped in warm blankets or jackets and given warm tea—not alcohol—to gradually raise their body temperature.

In emergencies, divers secured with safety lines are sent underwater to locate the break in the ice. Walking on frozen lakes is strictly banned due to unpredictable ice thickness and hidden weak spots.

The Kassel Fire Department's training ensures they are ready to respond to ice-related emergencies. The exercise at Bugasee reinforced key techniques for safely extracting victims from freezing water. Authorities continue to warn the public against venturing onto frozen lakes, where conditions can be deadly.
