Kazakhstan's Nauryznama Revives Traditions with AI and Cultural Flair
Kazakhstan has transformed its Nauryz celebrations into a ten-day cultural event called Nauryznama, running from March 14 to 23. Each day highlights different traditions, with March 18 dedicated to national clothing at Asfendiyarov Kazakh National Medical University (KazNMU). The event brought together students and faculty to explore the history and significance of Kazakh attire through modern and traditional displays. The Day of National Clothing at KazNMU featured a mix of old and new traditions. Faculty from the Department of Pharmaceutical and Toxicological Chemistry joined students from the School of Pharmacy in the festivities. A theatrical performance of Syrga Salu—a Kazakh engagement ritual where a ring is placed on a bride's finger—was staged, showcasing its enduring cultural role.
The event also included *Bata beru*, a blessing ceremony honouring elders and reinforcing generational ties. A standout moment was a digital fashion show, where AI technology blended the faces of participants with images of traditional costumes. This creative approach aimed to connect younger generations with their heritage in an engaging way. The celebration closed with a festive fair and remarks from the Head of the Department. Organisers hoped the activities would deepen students' appreciation for Kazakh customs while keeping traditions alive in contemporary society.
Nauryz remains one of Central Asia's oldest holidays, marking renewal, unity, and harmony with nature. Through events like Nauryznama, Kazakhstan continues to adapt its cultural practices for modern audiences. The blend of rituals, technology, and education at KazNMU reflects efforts to preserve heritage while making it relevant to today's youth.
