Khabarovsk's New $16.5M Tuberculosis Ward Opens to Fight Drug-Resistant Cases

A new tuberculosis ward has opened in Khabarovsk after years of construction. The facility, costing 1.5 billion rubles ($16.5 million), will treat the region's most severe cases. Its arrival comes as the Russian Far East remains a high-risk area for the disease.

The ward is now fully operational, with surgeries already underway. One patient, who had battled tuberculosis for five years, received successful treatment there. They described the new facility as comfortable and well-equipped.

Designed to handle 140 patients, the ward includes an admissions department, a specialised unit for multidrug-resistant tuberculosis, and three operating theatres. It also features an intensive care unit for post-operative and critical cases, alongside high-dependency isolation rooms. Accessible wards ensure patients with disabilities receive proper care. The facility is equipped with over 300 million rubles ($3.3 million) worth of advanced medical technology. A dedicated laboratory supports diagnostics and treatment. The region's need for such a centre remains pressing, as the Far East continues to report cases of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis.

The new ward strengthens Khabarovsk's ability to combat tuberculosis, particularly its most complex forms. With modern equipment and expanded capacity, it provides critical support for patients in a region where the disease remains a persistent challenge.
