Kreis Viersen's new program teaches teens nutrition and sustainability through hands-on lessons
A new health initiative has launched in Kreis Viersen to teach students about nutrition, sustainability, and well-being. The 13-week program, led by the Gesunde Kommune Kreis Viersen network, targets ninth-grade pupils with practical lessons on healthy living. The first session took place on September 25th, focusing on food waste and rescued ingredients. The program is a joint effort by Kreis Viersen and KreisSportBund Viersen e.V., with funding from AOK Rheinland/Hamburg, Barmer, and Techniker Krankenkasse until April 2027. Its aim is to embed health awareness in schools and the wider community.
On the opening day, students learned about food waste from the waste management department and Foodsharing. After the session, they used rescued ingredients to prepare a healthy snack. Future activities include more action days, the publication of health tips, and training for multipliers who will spread the knowledge further. Beyond theory, pupils will put their skills into practice by creating healthy snacks and compiling a cookbook. The curriculum covers four key areas: nutrition, sustainability, mental health, and physical activity.
The initiative plans to continue until at least 2027, with ongoing support from health insurers and local partners. More details about the network and upcoming events are available at www.gesundekommune-kreis-viersen.de. Schools and students will have access to resources and training to promote long-term healthy habits.
