Law students join fight to aid domestic violence survivors in Pinellas
A new partnership between CASA Pinellas and Stetson University College of Law is expanding legal support for domestic violence survivors. Nine law students have joined the organisation this semester to assist with real cases. Officials say the move comes as demand for accessible legal services continues to rise. CASA Pinellas currently serves around 3,000 survivors each year. A small team of attorneys and paralegals handles their cases, but the organisation's CEO, Lariana Forsythe, notes that legal needs are growing. Many survivors face challenges beyond protective injunctions, including housing disputes and financial control by abusers. Financial abuse, in particular, appears in nearly all domestic violence cases, often leaving victims without funds or the ability to hire private lawyers.
The partnership with Stetson Law allows students to gain practical experience while helping survivors. They will assist with casework, observe court proceedings, and draft legal documents. Vice Dean Jason Palmer called the collaboration a natural fit, highlighting the law school's commitment to community enrichment.
Beyond this initiative, CASA is also working with the Office of the State Courts Administrator. Together, they are developing a judicial 'bench book' focused on human trafficking cases. Meanwhile, Chief Justice Officer Noelle Polk Clark stressed that partnerships like these are essential. They help meet the rising demand for legal services and strengthen prevention efforts across the region. More than 50 survivors seek help each week at CASA Pinellas' Family Justice Center. The new law students will provide much-needed support, easing pressure on the existing team. With expanded resources, the organisation aims to address both immediate legal needs and long-term prevention strategies.
