Lidl Netherlands Sets Bold 2030 Goal for Healthier Food Sales

Lidl Netherlands has announced an ambitious new target for 2030, aiming for 46% of its sales to align with the country's dietary guidelines. The move follows updated advice from the Health Council of the Netherlands, which now recommends cutting red meat consumption in favor of plant-based proteins. The retailer has already made progress, surpassing its previous goal two years early.

In 2023, Lidl Netherlands reached 38% sales alignment with the Wheel of Five—an official Dutch food guide—exceeding its 2025 target ahead of schedule. This figure marked a rise from 36% in 2022. The company now plans to push this further, with the new 46% goal covering its entire product range on a per-kilogram basis. Health organizations provided input in shaping the target.

The retailer's focus will be on expanding sales of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and plant-based proteins. This strategy aligns with broader European efforts, as seen in Lidl's inclusion in the 2026 Superlist Environment Europe report. The ranking highlights the company's climate and protein transition plans, which include a 20% global increase in plant-based food sales by 2030.

Other Lidl branches are also taking action. In Germany, the chain set a 2022 goal to raise plant-based protein sources from 11% to 20% of its assortment by 2030, based on the Planetary Health Diet. Meanwhile, Lidl UK aims for 25% of protein sales to come from plant-based options by the same year, alongside doubling non-dairy revenue. Lidl Netherlands will monitor updates to the Wheel of Five, expected this spring, to refine its approach.

The 46% target reflects Lidl Netherlands' commitment to healthier and more sustainable food choices. The retailer's progress will depend on boosting specific product groups while adapting to new dietary recommendations. Achieving this goal would place the company well ahead of its earlier benchmarks.
