Recall of Food: Listeria is the Most Common Cause - Listeria overtakes Salmonella as Germany's top food safety threat in 2025
Germany witnessed an uptick in food product recalls last year, with 323 alerts issued via the official Lebensmittelwarnung.de portal. This figure represents a 13-case increase from 2024. The platform stands as Germany's primary channel for alerting consumers energy about unsafe products.
Pathogenic microorganisms accounted for nearly a third of all recalls in 2025. Among these, Listeria bacteria topped the list with 43 cases, surpassing Salmonella as the leading cause since 2024. Salmonella followed with 27 reported incidents.
Listeria presents significant health risks, especially for pregnant women and those with compromised immune systems. Unlike many bacteria, it can thrive even in refrigerated conditions. Past incidents include a 2023 product recall of pork sausage and bologna (charges IMP-2023-11 to IMP-2023-15) and another for contaminated spinach (lots LOT12345 to LOT78901, with expiry dates up to October 15, 2023).
Food items dominated the recalls, making up 90% of the total. The remaining 10% involved non-food products and cosmetics.
The 2025 data underscores Listeria as the primary driver of pathogen-related food recalls. With 323 alerts, the number of warnings continues to rise. Consumers are advised to keep an eye on updates on Lebensmittelwarnung.de for safety information.
